Student Example of 3.8 Paragraph
The excerpt from President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s speech on August 14, 1935 shows a liberal view because all of FDR's explanations confirm this perspective. First of all, FDR claims, “This social security measures… prevention of ill health.” A liberal view means that you believe in direct relief to people in need, and the social security act was created to help stabilize old, disabled, or retired citizens after the depression. Secondly, FDR argues, “It is a structure… of possible future depressions.” In this excerpt, FDR wanted to ensure that America wouldn’t go into another depression which only a liberal would do (conservatives believe that it will work itself out on it’s own). Finally, FDR tells us, “It will act as… relief to the needy.” FDR proves in this excerpt that he wants to give direct relief to the poor which means giving them clothing, food, shelter, and helping them get back on their feet. In conclusion, FDR’s speech reflected a liberal view because of his belief in direct relief programs and providing assurances that another depression would not occur.
